DAIRY
The world's most efficient
dairy nation
New Zealand is the world's largest exporter of dairy products - feeding over 100 million people across more than 130 countries. For dairy students, there is simply no better place on earth to see a fully integrated, pasture-based dairy system operating at extraordinary scale and efficiency.

WHY NEW ZEALAND
The world's dairy classroom
New Zealand's dairy industry is unlike any other on earth. A mild maritime climate, year-round grass growth, and decades of relentless innovation have produced a pasture-based system that feeds over 100 million people from a herd of just 6.3 million cows - with a fraction of the inputs used by barn-based systems elsewhere in the world.

Fonterra, the farmer-owned cooperative at the heart of the industry, is one of the world's largest dairy companies - processing around 22 billion litres of milk per year and exporting products to over 130 countries. For students studying dairy science, animal nutrition, food technology or agricultural economics, understanding how Fonterra and NZ's dairy system works is essential industry knowledge.
"New Zealand's pasture-based dairy system produces more milk per cow, per hectare, with fewer inputs than almost any other system in the world - and seeing it operating at scale changes how students think about the industry forever."
-
World's #1 dairy exporter - NZ dairy products reach over 130 countries, generating NZ$20B+ in annual export revenue

-
Pasture-based efficiency - NZ cows graze outdoors year-round, producing milk at one of the lowest carbon footprints of any dairy system globally

-
Fonterra cooperative model - a unique farmer-owned structure processing 22 billion litres per year, studied by dairy industries worldwide

-
Innovation at scale - from robotic milking and precision nutrition to environmental compliance and sustainability reporting

KEY SITES
Where we take your students
Every dairy itinerary is built around your faculty's specific learning objectives. These are our most educationally rich sites - from farm to factory to research station.
01
Waikato · Large-scale dairy farms
Waikato Dairy Farms
The Waikato is the heartland of New Zealand's dairy industry - lush, green, and home to some of the country's most productive dairy farms. Students visit large-scale pasture-based operations, observe rotational grazing systems, attend morning milking, and meet farmers and farm managers who run some of the most efficient dairy businesses in the world.
02
Waikato · Processing & cooperative
Fonterra Processing Facility
The world's largest dairy cooperative - processing milk into products ranging from whole milk powder and cheese to infant formula and pharmaceutical-grade casein. Students tour a Fonterra plant, learn about the cooperative ownership model, quality systems, and the logistics of exporting dairy products to over 130 countries.
03
Hamilton · Industry body
DairyNZ
New Zealand's dairy industry body, funded by dairy farmers to drive research, extension and advocacy. Students meet DairyNZ scientists and extension specialists working on animal productivity, environmental sustainability, water quality, and the future of New Zealand dairy farming.
04
Canterbury · South Island dairy
Canterbury Irrigation-Fed Dairy Farms
A fascinating contrast to the Waikato - Canterbury's dairy farms depend on centre-pivot irrigation rather than rainfall, offering students insight into a completely different system. Larger herds, flatter land, and a different set of environmental challenges make Canterbury dairy a compelling counterpoint to the North Island experience.
05
Lincoln · Academic research
Lincoln University - Dairy & Animal Science
New Zealand's specialist land-based university with world-class dairy and animal science research. Faculty meetings, research farm visits, and presentations from leading NZ dairy scientists - an essential academic anchor for any dairy programme.
06
Palmerston North · Research campus
AgResearch - Grasslands Campus
Home to some of NZ's most important pastoral research - pasture species development, animal nutrition, greenhouse gas emissions, and sustainable farming systems. Students engage with scientists whose work directly shapes the future of NZ's pasture-based dairy industry.
